Avoid Cold Feet This Valentine’s Day With These Warm and Cozy Slippers for Men (1)

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and if you’re still looking for some great gift ideas, I highly recommend a pair of slippers. I have spent 400 hours testing over 10 pairs of slippers and found that style and warmth are the two biggest things to keep in mind when buying and gifting.

While chocolate gifts and flower deliveries are great Valentine's Day options, a pair of comfortable slippers will last much longer. I think it’s safe to say that any self-care routine will be accompanied by a pair of warm slippers paired with a luxurious robe. You can sit back and relax, letting the day's cares melt away.

Before making my list of slippers to test, I took the advice of our expert, Supna Reilly, DPM, from Performance Podiatry Partners and team podiatrist for the Chicago Fire Soccer Club, when she said support in slippers is very important. “Slippers that provide a solid heel counter (the way the back of the heel hugs and supports your rear foot) and a well-contoured arch are best for your feet.”

When I’m just lounging around, my favorite slippers are those that slip on and off easily, whereas when I’m working around the apartment doing chores, I opt for ones that are moccasin-type slippers to keep my feet supported and warm. Our best slippers for men have an option for every personality and style.

What We Don't Like

  • Lining isn’t real fur

The Land’s End Moccasin was the top choice and one of my favorite slippers I tested because of its stylish look and snug fit. The suede held up nicely, and I only noticed a couple of stains on them after I wore them—either from food spills in the kitchen or from my co*cker Spaniel, who loves to lay his head on my feet as I work.

I love that they're stylish and look more like a casual loafer than a moccasin. Even the website offers suggestions on what to wear with them, such as slacks and a dress belt. I prefer to wear them with jogger sweats and a comfy robe.

One small issue I found during testing is the lack of real fur. While I still think they are worthy of the top spot as the best slippers for men, it would have been nice to have real fur. Don’t get me wrong, the faux fur lining was comfortable and kept my feet warm.

Before you buy, also note that these slippers fit snugly. I didn’t mind because I don’t tend to wear socks with my slippers. If you wear socks with slippers, I would suggest bumping up to the next slipper size to be safe.

Either way, these slippers are not machine washable, and the recommended care for them is to use a suede brush. You could probably even use some mild suede cleaner along with that brush.

If you’re looking for slippers that won’t break the bank and offer comfort, consider the Vonmay. After wearing them for two hours a day during the test, I can confirm that these slippers are very comfortable, thanks to a lot of cushion in the footbed. However, I noticed that when I walked, I sometimes felt the sides of the outsole rubbing against my foot. It wasn't something that caused any discomfort. It was just how the slippers were constructed (or maybe even how I was walking).

The slippers have a drawstring that you can use to tighten or loosen them for a different fit. I tested the drawstring for its tightening ability and found it did work and locked into place, but I realized I didn’t need it simply because the shoe fit snugly as it was. They kept my feet warm and comfortable, but I noticed a little slipping when walking on hardwood and tile floors.

The Olukai Moloā slippers are an excellent option for those looking for premium house slippers thanks to their luxe appearance and high-end materials: leather and a shearling lining. You can wear them two different ways—as a shoe or by using the collapsible heel for a slip-on, which none of the other slippers on this list have as a feature.

Olukai also offers care instructions for every type of footwear. Clicking on the Product Care section takes you to a page where you can choose your footwear, in this case, slippers. Choose your material, and then follow the instructions. For this particular pair, they recommend placing them into a washable laundry bag and then into the washing machine.

This is worth splurging the extra $40 - $50 because you can wear them two different ways, which makes it feel like two different slippers, and, of course, because of the quality leather and shearling lining.

Getting in and out of a slipper is arguably one of my top priorities, which is why I chose the Ugg men’s Scuff Slippers. They're light, soft, comfortable, and easy to slip on and off. The Ugg Men's Scuff Slippers are my go-to slippers because of their craftsmanship, style, and materials like suede uppers, Uggplush material of upcycled wool and Tencel, and suede outsoles. Sure, there's no arch support, but these are the slippers you will wear when you get out of bed on a cold morning and stumble to the kitchen to grab your first cup of coffee.

These are as perfect for the colder months as they are for the warmer months. These fit perfectly, and there is no need to wear socks with them. The wool is moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating, which means my feet never felt overheated. They're just comfortable, easy to wear—and use—slippers that will last. If you do get them dirty, you can clean them with a damp cloth, perhaps some leather or suede cleaner for the more difficult spots, but they should never go into the washing machine.

What We Don't Like

  • The wool sheds

The Glerups wool slippers are the perfect indoor slippers because of their soft, thick layers of wool. The wool is molded in such a way that it forms to your feet, wrapping it in a thick, soft layer. The leather soles work great on carpets and rugs. When walking on tile, there is a certain amount of sliding, but it's manageable.

The fit is true to size, with breathing room. I tried the slippers with socks, but the fit was too tight, and the socks were unnecessary. I liked the style, too; I say clog-like with a heel collar, but they're described more as a mule-style slipper on the website. While wool is notorious for shrinking, these slippers are relatively easy to care for. You can use a leather brush for the soles or a damp cloth. You can vacuum the wool to remove grime and dust, and if there are any stains, simply wipe the wool with a damp cloth.

One of the things I noticed while wearing the slippers was shedding. According to Glerups, the first three or four weeks are the toughest on the wool, and they will shed, which is a normal occurrence due to the natural treatment of the wool fiber.

What We Don't Like

  • Runs small

The Minnetonka slippers have this great anti-skid outsole that is perfect for wearing outdoors, especially for running quick errands like going to the post office or walking the dog around the block. I liked how the rubber soles were anti-skid, even on the tile floors. These slippers were narrower than the others, which was nice because it felt as though they were giving you some added support, which made up for the thinner footbed cushion. They run small, though, and there wasn't any room for a foot with socks on. Due to their small size, it felt like my toes were pushing through the tip of the slipper. This is an instance where I would order the next size up, and since they offer half sizes, I would have gone with an 11.5. Also, if you have wider feet, they offer a wide option.

They're very stylish and classic slippers with lovely, soft suede, and the faux fur lining is comfortable. You can tell the stitching is durable and built to last. If you need to clean them, simply grab a damp cloth and spot-clean them as needed. Even though I never wore socks with these slippers, my feet were never cold and stayed warm and toasty.

If you're looking for slippers that look like boots but provide the comfort of slippers, consider this option from Sorel. The heel and the tongue come up your foot just above ankle height and then drop below your ankle, giving you freedom to move your foot around.

They fit great, and there was room enough for my foot to breathe and not feel cramped. They are very durable around the stitching on top and the rubber sole. The soles have a good grip on the surfaces and have excellent traction. I never tried wearing socks with these because there isn't enough room, and if there were, my feet would overheat quickly.

Cleaning the slippers is easy; just take a suede brush to spot-clean any dirt and debris. The footbed is removable, but you can't wash it, nor can you purchase replacements, so I'm wondering why it's even a feature.

What We Don't Like

  • The lining is not removable

I see the allure of Crocs now that I've tested them. Many people (like myself) have a very polarizing feeling about Crocs. They are everywhere, especially in the kitchens I worked in years ago—cooks/chefs love them for their incredible all-day comfort (similar to nurses). When I actually put them on, I was blown away by the comfort.

If you could have an all-terrain category for slippers, these would be the slippers. These slippers were comfortable right out of the starting gate. They are a let's-get-up-and-go type of slipper. Perfect for those morning walks with the dog, for walking around the house, avoiding the cold tile in the winter, and they're even great right out of the shower or hanging poolside.

I know they sound like a great slipper, but the one drawback is that the faux fur lining isn't removable, and it catches every little piece of debris. For example, if I walk the dog and go in the grass, twigs get stuck in the fur. Not just stuck, but tangled stuck. The good thing is, if they get dirty, you can hand wash them using mild soap and water.

But in all seriousness, they are great shoes disguised as slippers. A friend of mine has some, and she swears by them, but she only wears them in the house and around the yard. On the other hand, another friend wears them and adorns them with Jibbitz. I get it. They're comfortable. They don't smell (yes, I have been smelling them), and they're worth it. As I'm writing this, I found out that Crocs sells an actual slipper. Something I wasn't aware of when testing started. We'll have to put them to the test in the next round.

What We Don't Like

  • The rawhide lace kept coming untied

Feet come in all shapes and sizes, so these slippers are the best choice for individuals with wider feet thanks to their range of wide size options. These slippers have it all: suede upper, shearling lining, rawhide laces, and a very grippy sole. I found that they fit well lengthwise but were too wide for my foot. Despite this, I really liked the fur's thickness and the soft, pliable suede, which kept my feet nice and warm.

I have wider feet, but they were a little too wide for my feet. I think if you wore socks with these slippers, they would be the perfect fit. People with wider feet will find these very comfortable, and they make a great indoor/outdoor slipper because of the rubber sole. The sole had a nice traction pattern and gripped nicely on tile surfaces. The only thing that bothered me with the slippers was the fact the laces kept untying.

What We Don't Like

  • All Polyester

Most of the slippers I tested had some sort of memory foam, some thinner than others, but this pair had the best memory foam cushion. It was like walking on a cloud, and the footbed felt softer and more cushioned on the foot. The only thing I didn't like was that the slippers are made using micro suede—a type of microfiber—made from polyester. Unlike wool, polyester doesn’t wick moisture away, and it’s a less breathable material, which can make feet sweat and lead to foot odor.

There were a couple of minor issues, like a long thread that wasn't cut, the heel collar would flatten if I didn't run my finger along it to make sure my heel wasn't resting on it, and when I washed it, it retained more water than I would have liked. On the upside, though, it dried in a day or so.

I would like to see this in a leather and shearling version, but that's not to say I disliked this slipper. On the contrary, I enjoyed wearing these slippers and returned to them more often than not.

The Ugg Ascot Slipper is an excellent option for those needing a narrow slipper, offering a comfortable and snug fit. As with any Ugg footwear, it’s made of suede and Uggplush, upcycled wool, and Tencel. What sets them apart from the Ugg Scuff slippers I also tested is that they have a topical water resistance treatment that repels moisture.

The footbed is made from rubber and is embossed with the Ugg logo, which means you can take these slippers outdoors to run errands, walk the dog, or even dress it up for casual work days. The Ascot is available in seven colors and has regular or wide options.

RockDove has been on our list for years now, thanks to its memory foam interior and machine-washable fabric. I found these to be comfortable, and while they fit nicely, they work better when wearing socks. They're great memory foam slippers that are clog-style slippers you can easily slip on and off. The rubber sole is perfect for indoor and outdoor use and works best on carpet, concrete, or asphalt surfaces. That's not to say they won't work on tile floors because they will. I just found that there is less grip on the tile.

Aside from being durable and comfortable, they are easy to clean; just toss them in the washer and let them air dry. One thing to note: run them on a couple of spin cycles to remove excess water. Since they are cotton and memory foam, they retain more moisture.

Even though the slippers seemed larger, they stayed on my feet well without any slipping-off issues. I attribute that to the back heel collar, and I noticed I couldn't feel the spiky massager arch support system through the memory foam with my foot. The slippers are available in size ranges like 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10, but then jump to 10.5, with another jump to 11-12. I found these to be loose-fitting, and if I were to change anything, I would consider a 10.5 size over an 11. Anything lower than that for me would be too small.

If you do any walking around the neighborhood in your slippers, try out these Skechers, which are known for style and comfort. During testing, I found that they were warm, comfortable, and great for indoor and outdoor use. They're constructed of a thick microfiber, memory foam, and faux fur lining that wraps your feet in coziness for as long as you wear them. The slippers are a great non-slip option that worked well on the hardwood floors and tile, and they also worked great on the deck and concrete pavers.

Overall, it was like wearing a shoe. Which, to me, was the problem. They felt more like a shoe than an actual slipper and were too bulky for my taste. Looking at it from a slipper aspect, they were warm, comfortable, and fit well. The care instructions say they are machine washable, but I didn't wash them because I felt it could damage the structure of the slipper. If these were less shoe-like and more house slippers, I would have enjoyed them more.

How We Tested Slippers for Men

I spent over 400 hours testing 12 slippers throughout my typical day, which extended into the night, to better understand their construction and comfort. I typically wear a size 10.5 or 11 shoe, depending on the brand, but for testing, I ordered all size 11.

To test the slippers' durability, I wore them throughout the day under various conditions, like taking the dog for a walk, checking the mail, and hauling the trash bins to the curb. Some of the slippers were washed and air-dried to see how well they stood up to rigorous washing machine cycles.

While some were made of high-quality leather, others relied on popular materials like memory foam for comfort. I looked at the slipper's soles to determine whether they created traction on different surfaces to prevent slipping, and wore them on a variety of surfaces at home.

Some slippers had higher quality materials, some had better designs, and others had varying degrees of comfort, but in the end, it came down to style and warmth.

What to Look for in Slippers for Men

Design

The ideal slipper design will ultimately come down to personal preference. However, there are two factors to consider to ensure that you select the best design for your needs.

  • Determine the slipper style. There are so many slipper styles to choose from that it can be overwhelming. I recommend staying with the most popular slipper styles, such as moccasins, booties, slides, clogs, and open- or closed-toe slippers. My personal favorites were the Lands' End Men's Suede Moccasin Slippers and the UGG Men's Scuff Slippers.
  • Consider the color and pattern. Choose something that complements your style and that you find appealing as well as comfortable, whether that be in the footbed, the lining, or both. The L.L. Bean Men's Wicked Good Moccasins were two-tone blue and brown mixed with a soft supple suede, making them a great design option.

Material

It’s important to consider the different types of material used for the upper, lining, and outsole of your slipper.

  • The upper material should be of good quality since this will have the most exposure besides the outsole. Materials such as leather and microfiber, like those found in the Minnetonka Men's Pile Lined Hardsole Slipper, are great options since they are durable.
  • The lining material is often different from the upper material. When choosing lining material, go with something that has a soft and cozy feel to it. Material like faux fur, memory foam, or shearling provides a lot of comfort for your feet. Take the Glerups Wool Slip-On, for example. It has an all-wool upper, which is perfect for moisture-wicking and heat regulation.
  • The outsole material should be made of something that will give you traction on various surfaces. I found soft rubber soles like those in the Crocs Classic Lined Clog and Vonmay Men's Slipper to be the best in traction and anti-skid.

Size

When selecting your ideal slippers, you want to make sure that they fit comfortably without being too tight or loose. You also want to consider the shape of your foot or whether or not you need arch support. “If your foot is sliding around in a slipper, or if you are starting to get pain in the heel, the ankle, the arch, or the ball of the foot, these are not a good choice for your feet,” says Reilly. If you're going to wear socks with your slippers, consider the thickness of the socks.

Care and Maintenance

Some slippers are machine washable, whereas others may require hand washing or no washing at all. Always check the care instructions to determine how to keep them clean and fresh. When you're not wearing your slippers, it is recommended that they be stored in a clean and dry area, like a closet shoe rack, to prevent odors. It’s also worth considering having several pairs of slippers around the house for different seasons or needs. For example, a thicker, plusher pair of slippers like the Minnetonka Men's Pile Lined Hardsole Slippers are perfect for winter, while a lighter, airier pair like the Bombas Men's Gripper Slippers are great for the summer.

Slippers should be washed periodically. Some brands have material that is not washing machine friendly; in these cases, you can purchase an antimicrobial spray to keep them from retaining odor,” says Reilly.
