What I love about using these wonton wrappers to make an appetizer is that they are so easy to work with and they make whatever you put inside of them look really fancy and special. Folks will think you made these delicate pastry cups, but you can just pick them up at most grocery stores. (It can be our little secret.)

In this recipe, they are filled with pork sausage, chopped peppers and onions, Colby cheese, and ranch dressing. I bet you never cooked with ranch dressing before! It may seem like an odd thing, but it adds such wonderful flavor and creaminess to this recipe.

NOTE: If you attempt to just press the wonton wrapper into the cup, it’s going to tear. You want to pinch the wrapper together into the flower shape shown above, insert it into the baking cup, and then gently press it into place. With this method, I had no tears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these Sausage Wonton Appetizer Bites ahead of time?

Absolutely! The great thing about these appetizer bites is that you can prepare them in advance. After assembling the wontons, you can freeze them on a baking sheet until firm, and then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be stored in the freezer for up to a month. When you’re ready to serve, simply bake them straight from the freezer, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.

Can I substitute the sausage for a different protein?

Of course! While the recipe calls for sausage, you can certainly experiment with different proteins to suit your taste preferences. Ground chicken, turkey, or even diced shrimp could make great alternatives. Just make sure to adjust the seasoning accordingly to enhance the flavors of your chosen protein.

How do I prevent the wonton wrappers from drying out?

A: Wonton wrappers can be a bit delicate and prone to drying out when exposed to air for too long. To keep them fresh and pliable while assembling the appetizer bites, cover the unused wrappers with a damp kitchen towel. This will prevent them from drying out and tearing, allowing you to work with them more easily.
